The Winter Haven Council of Garden Clubs, Inc. is sponsoring a "fun" flower show April 24-27, 2014 at Ridge Art Association, Winter Haven.  This is a "non judged" show.  The theme is Reflections.  Members of any area club are invited to enter their arrangements.   Designers will be asked to choose the art work they would like to "reflect" on Thursday and Friday, April 10-11. Art work will be chosen on a first come first serve basis.  A People's Choice selection will be made during the opening reception on April 24th.

What:  Reflections "fun"  Flower Show

Where: Ridge Art Center, Chain of Lakes Complex, 210 Cypress Gardens Blvd. SW, Winter Haven

When:  Designers choose art: April 10-11, 1-4 pm  Bring a camera to photograph "your" art
             Opening Reception, Thursday April 24, 6-7:30 pm
             Flower Show: April 24-27, 12:30 - 4 pm on weekdays & 1 hour prior to all Winter Haven Theater performances

Why:   To educate the community and have fun

How:   All arrangements to "reflect" the chosen art.
            Dried and fresh flowers only -- no artificial
            Horticulture: Planters -- plants creatively arranged in a container.  Be sure containers will not spill 
                        Dish gardens, Orchids, and Bromeliads creatively presented
                        Designers will be responsible for refreshing their designs as necessary during the show.

The marker was unveiled by former MarcoIsland City Council Chairman, Joe Batte, and Community Affairs Parks and Recreation Director, Brian Milk. Affordable Landscaping installed the garden beneath the sign. Plants were donated by Affordable Landscaping and several other sources, including some Blue Tango Bromeliads dug from the Mirage on the Gulf gardens by yours truly. Calusa Greden Club Members were were asked to wear red/white/blue (plus name tags) .

Club Officers handed out red carnations to each lady attending the whole ceremony and then members handed out flyers with information and a request for donations to maintain the sign and the garden in the future.

The club contacted by the new Marco Island City Council Chairman, Kenneth Honecker and Brian Milk to let us know that Calusa Garden Club will be receiving a City of Marco Island Proclamation, which will be presented at the regular December or January City Council meeting.
A Blue Star Memorial Marker was Dedicated on Veteran’s Day at the Marco Island Veterans Community park. The dedication was a special part of the whole
Veterans Day ceremony at the park. At the end of the ceremonies by the VFW by the circle of flags, the colors were marched over to our marker, accompanied by the Marco Island Strummers. Everyone was asked to follow the flags and there  was had a great turnout. It was estimated that there werea bout 300 people there.


The AVPCI held their annual fall plant sale Saturday, September 28, 2013. The sale was very successful with over l40 people attending.  Lunch was prepared by Warden Sheffield, Officer Tommy Sauls and Cristine Sauls, Officers Sauls Mother.  Many Garden Clubs were represented and enjoyed the plants, beautiful gardens and lunch.  The proceeds will be spent for improvements to the grounds and equipment as needed.  Officer Sauls is interested in starting a Hydroponic gardening system.  Many thanks to everyone for their continuous support of the “Therapy Thru Plants Program”.
